Selvie out (of starting lineup) for N.C. State

University of South Florida All-American DE George Selvie, who has practiced sparingly the past three days because of an ankle injury suffered last week, will play Saturday, but will not start. It will end Selvie’s team-high streak of 30 consecutive starts, every game he’s played in his USF career.

Sophomore NT Terrell McClain (ankle) also won’t start against N.C. State.

“Will they go in the second play?” USF coach Jim Leavitt said. “I don’t know.”

Sophomore DE Craig Marshall will get his first start in place of Selvie, while sophomore NT Sampson Genus, who missed last week’s game with an ankle injury, will start for McClain.

Leavitt said he was replacing Selvie and McClain in the starting lineup to reward Marshall and Genus, who have taken the bulk of reps in practice this week.

“That doesn’t mean George won’t play a lot of football, but we’re going to start guys who have practiced and worked hard,” Leavitt said.

Starting SS Carlton Williams (hip), who has been limited in practice this week, is expected to play Saturday.

Also, RG Zach Hermann, who suffered a broken foot Sept 8, definitely will not return for next week’s game with Pittsburgh, Leavitt said. OL coach Mike Simmonds initially hoped Hermann could return when the Bulls began Big East play.

Jason, He’s been moved inside to tackle. He’s still got a ways ago to contribute.

DT?  Is he big enough to play tackle? Has he gained weight since the start of the season?  Can you elaborate on the “he’s still got a ways to go” ? Is it work ethic?  Just curious because this guy seemed to have what it took to contribute quite early.

Mark, Leavitt said after today’s practice that Bedford had been moved inside to DT. He’s listed at 6-5, 250. When he first got here, I asked Wally Burnham about him and he said, to paraphrase him, Bedford needs to learn where to go. I would interpret that as he’s still learning USF’s schemes and with McClain, Genus and Harris, all dinged up at DT and NT, they need more bodies inside than at end. They probably figure he can contribute more at an inside position, if needed, at the current time.

Gee whiz…these injuries are certainly mounting.

This could be very, very bad.

Bedford has been disappointing so far, but Craig Marshall has been good, so maybe it’s a wash.  Bedford was hyped up a lot before the season, though…

I hope Selvie stays next year so we only have to replace Buie.

If the all American “G. Selvie” can walk, you start him for the first snap then take him out.  A guy like Selvie does not need to practice if he is hurt, he is an All American.  Sometimes i have to scratch my head over the constant Bone Head moves this Coaching staff makes at this level in college football sports, it almost makes the Zooker Man look like he graduated from Harvard when he was a bone head at UF…Brett your thoughts…and dont be a homer about it.

David M., do you start the best players available on game day or start the players that practiced. If I was coach, I’d start the players able to practice. By starting someone that didn’t practice, you send a message that practice isn’t that important, so if you’re hurt, sore, no need to practice, because you’ll still start. I think you need a uniform rule for everyone - if you can’t practice by X day, you don’t start. Also, by doing this it makes it even more special for the players who started every game of their career(Sipp, I think Sarosi also, Benjamin). Not only were they good enough to start every game, but they also stayed healthy. Like Leavitt said, it doesn’t mean Selvie won’t come in on the second play.

Also, in Bedford’s defense he was taking 20 credits this summer to be eligible to play for USF, so he probably wasn’t in top shape when he got here.  Give him some time.  He’s only been at USF for about 7-8 weeks.

David M., you figured it out. I’m related to Zonald P. Zooker, of Shaker Heights. Amazing that you knew that. Yeah, you’re right no one needs to practice to start in a game. Oh wait, they already do that - it’s called the NFL.
