Baseball commissioner Bud Selig called the Rays attendance issue “bad” during interview on Sirus XM’s Mad Dog Radio Show with host Chris Russo before Thursday’s Game 2 of the World Series.
Here is a transcript of the portion of the interview that dealt with the Rays:
Russo: “Stuart Sternberg used the term ‘vaporize’ after they lost to Texas and he had 29,000 in his ballpark for game 4. A lot of people took that to mean contraction. Doesn’t seem like there’s hope for a new ballpark. It seemed like he was exasperated. What can you tell me about the Tampa situation?”
Selig: “I like Stu Sternberg a lot, as you probably know. I have a great deal of respect for him. He’s a very thoughtful, very interesting guy, done a great job there, done a brilliant job there. I, too, am concerned about their attendance. I track attendance every day. He knows it. I’ve talked to him a lot. They are a wonderful organization, produced a terrific team this year and finished last in the American League in attendance. I’ll let you draw your own conclusion. That’s bad.”
Russo: “Is the stadium situation in Tampa a lost cause?”
Selig: “I can’t answer that yet but I’m usually an optimist and I don’t have any reason to be too optimistic.”
