Led by the second-place finish of sophomore Sabrina Whiting, the Seffner Christian girls cross country team captured the school’s first-ever team title in the sport when the Crusaders won their own invitational Saturday morning at the Dover Trails.
Whiting covered the 5-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 34 seconds, 32 seconds behind winner Katelyn Greenleaf of St. Petersburg Northside Christian. Armwood senior Amber Duncan (20:42) was third, Bobi Labrant of Indian Rocks Christian was fourth and Steinbrenner junior Lauren Garris (21:40) was fifth.
Seffner Christian’s girls scored 82 points, just four ahead of runner-up Steinbrenner. The Crusaders’ other scorers were Celi Guzman (ninth), Alexis Bright (14th), Brittany Keller (27th) and Sarai Simmons (34th). Steinbrenner had two other top-20 finishers, Erica Partlow (15th) and Samantha Yarish (18th).
In the boys’ meet, Land O’Lakes got a first-place individual finish from Travis Nichols to help the Gators win the team title, 64-94, over Mount Dora Bible. Seffner Christian (100) was third, Brandon (106) fourth and Shorecrest Prep (114) fifth.
Nichols battled Armwood senior Brandon Duncan for the individual crown, winning in 16:46, seven seconds ahead of Duncan.
