Here’s the report on Saturday’s scrimmage from Tampa Tribune correspondent Gregg Becnel:
The University of South Florida’s scrimmage Saturday was cut a bit short by inclement weather, but that might’ve been a good thing considering the team’s performance.
“I saw as much as I needed to see. We ran about 80 plays. The rain did kind of catch us a little bit there,” USF coach Jim Leavitt said. “It was 1’s vs. 2’s until I got mad, then we went 1’s and 1’s for a while and 2’s and 2’s. I just didn’t think we were as sharp as I was really hoping.
“We haven’t played yet and we’re still working out some things. … We’re not there yet. There were some good and bad out of both [the offense and defense]. Nobody fired me up [Saturday].”
Offensive highlights were Matt Grothe touchdown passes to A.J. Love (60 yards) and Dontavia Bogan (5), and Jamar Taylor’s short scoring run.
Defensively, DE George Selvie had three sacks and CB Tyler Roberts had an interception.
“Selvie played a few snaps then after about three sacks we just pulled him out,” Leavitt said. “The guy he was going against was a true freshman, so that’s not saying a whole lot. George is going to come to play.”
With two weeks to go before the season opener against Tennessee-Martin, there are still questions about what kind of team USF will field.
“We don’t have a lot of depth,” Leavitt said. “We have some guys that are going to go out and try to play as hard as they can. What kind of team do we have? We’ll find out soon enough.”
GRISSOM HURT: Freshman DL Cory Grissom, who has drawn high praise from Leavitt during training camp, went down with an ankle injury during the scrimmage. The severity wasn’t immediately known.
ODDS AND ENDS: C Jake Griffin, P/K Delbert Alvarado and K Maikon Bonani didn’t participate because of soreness. Ilia Petrov did all the punting while Justin Teachey handled all the kicking duties. … Former Bulls QB Pat Julmiste and K Bill Gramatica were in attendance, as was former Bucs punter Mark Royal. ... Dave Weekley (play-by-play) and Doug Graber (analyst) are the announcers for USF’s opener against Tennessee-Martin, Aug. 30, 7 p.m. on Catch 47 and SportsNet (New York).

Brett....I was looking at the ESPN/ABC TV schedule and they only have two games being televised on Sat. Sept. 27th so far. Is there any talk of the USF/NCSt. game being picked up for television?
Thanks.

Hector, anything is possible. Obviously the higher ranked USF is, the more attractive they become. I’d be surprised if a USF-ACC game wasn’t televised somewhere.
