Sapp On Kiffin: It’s Always About Him

Posted Dec 6, 2008 by Joe Henderson

Updated Dec 6, 2008 at 09:32 AM

Former Bucs defensive tackle Warren Sapp took a shot at long-time defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin on the show “Inside The NFL” this week on the cable network Showtime.

He said Kiffin never gave proper credit to the defensive stalwarts, including Sapp, that formed the backbone of the Bucs great defenses. He also said that with Kiffin, “It’s always been about him.” He also said that “my guy” is former defensive line coach Rod Marinelli, currently head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Here’s a transcript:

Simms: I believe the NFL is about coaching and they give you a chance to win games. And Monte Kiffin down in Tampa Bay – you (Sapp) played on that defense – he has done it a lot of different ways. They’re playing a different style of defense than I’ve seen them play in the past. They’re more aggressive. It’s working. What about Monte Kiffin?

Sapp: I’ll tell you what. The reason why I’ll kind of disagree with you is because he (Kiffin) is riding on the golden carriage that me, (Derrick) Brooks, Ronde (Barber) pulled for years. At no point have I ever heard Monte Kiffin come out and give any of those horses that’s pulling that carriage he’s riding on any love. Any love. Have you two … tell me …

Collinsworth: Wait, wait, wait …

Simms: Hold it, hold it … first off, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Monte Kiffin get interviewed.

Sapp: Oh yeah, I’ve seen him in the middle of a game drawing up a zone dog (blitz) in the middle of a ball game. I looked at Brooks and said, ‘Hey, you see your coordinator up there giving away the defense?’ It’s about him. It’s always been about him. I’ll bark him out of the building. I’ve heard all the stories. I’ll give you an unsung hero …

Collinsworth: Wait a minute. You gotta go back …

Sapp: You want to go back to Kiff?

Collinsworth: You’re doggin’ your guy? That is your guy.

Sapp: My guy is Marinelli.

Collinsworth: Really?

Sapp: My guy is Marinelli. I’ll make it that simple for you.

well, i dont even know what to say about that.  at one side you have Monte who draws up the plays and has been stellar for the past 10-11 years. then you have Sapp who was a demon seed of the Kiffin scheme in the middle. and sapp doesnt like him?  sapp always tells it like it is, so maybe there is some truth to it….?

I would expect nothing less from Sapp. No appreciation at all for what Kiffin has done.  Kiffin does almost no interviews ever, and all he can do is complain that the players never get enough credit.

The fact is, statistics do not lie.  This defense has two players from 2002 (Brooks and Barber), yet it is still in the top ten.  That tells us that it is the drafting, the free agents, and the coaching that keeps the team high, not the original players who are all retired.  Sapp should get rid of his ego and become a real analyst.  Otherwise, he will remain on third tier Showtime forever.  That is why the other analysts were in such disbelief when Sapp yapped like he did when he played in the NFL - not much thought but a lot of mouth.

I would want to hear want John Lynch has to say about Warren Sapp’s comments regarding Monte Kiffin before speculating whether or not what Sapp said was legit. Perhaps it was just a beef between Sapp & Kiffin. I think Warren probably still feels sore at Kiffin because Monte probably had a big say in Warren Sapp leaving. If John Lynch agreed with Warren, then I think Sapp might have a legitimate comment

True or not, this show was on Wed. night. I can’t believe that it took three days to get to the local media.

Shawn - Sapp tells it like it is, in his opinion. The guy should not be allowed anywhere near a microphone for all of the ridiculous comments he makes. He’s completely subjective and constantly has a chip on his shoulder for whatever reason - perhaps for the way his career went down the drain after joining the Raiders. Either way, the guy was a stud for the Bucs on the field, and clown off the field.

Sapp was great on the field and can be really funny on camera but I wouldn’t put much stock in his opinions. If Brooks says it I’d believe him but Sapp saying someone else is full of himself is laughable.

Sapp is clearly an idiot. It’s not about Kiff, Warren…its always gotta be about YOU or you make sure you act like a total jackazz until you force it to become about YOU. Fatass..i wish he’d shut his mouth, because I actually was a Sapp fan but it’s becoming harder to stay a fan with every retarded word that comes out of his mouth.

leave it to a loud mouth hasbeen to take shots at a near sevent man. monte is considered by ALL of his peers as one of the greatest ever. for sapp to even suggest that he was the deciding factor that made the bucs d what it is is asinine. the cover 2 has been around long before sapp ever stepped on a field. monte found ways to tweak it and make it better. how has the bucs d been rated so high after sapp and all other others have left? please, please, please just fade away.

Warren forgot that John Lynch and Simeon Rice also pulled the golden chariot for the Bucs.  With Warrens mouth get use to this type of stuff as he will be on tv for awhile cause the tv execs love it.

if you listen to the full interview you can hear simms and collinsworths amazement at what sapp is saying. even sapps peer are in disbelief that he could say something like that out loud let alone to national media. if sapp keeps making comment like this he wont be around for too long. the media may like it, but the nfl and players wont. if he continues like this hell be a cohost with dumig befor getting to become a real commentator.
