Ever since USF coach Jim Leavitt was hired, the Bulls’ program was known more for its defense because of Leavitt’s defensive background.
That certainly won’t be the case this season - Leavitt has gone on the offensive, at least in paying his assistant coaches.
New offensive coordinator Mike Canales will receive $200,000 and will be the highest paid USF assistant in 2009-10. It’s the first time in program history, USF’s offensive coordinator will make more than the defensive coordinator.
Promoted from WR coach to offensive coordinator, Canales received a $60,000 raise from last season and will receive $200,000. That’s $10,000 more than new defensive coordinator Joe Tresey ($190,000) and $40,000 than new co-defensive coordinator David Blackwell $160,000.
At Clemson, Blackwell made $142,000 in 2007-08. He did not receive a raise in 2008-09 and made the same $142,000 figure at Clemson, according to The State in Columbia, S.C. So Blackwell gets an $18,000 bump to come to USF.
Canales’ salary is $20,000 less than what USF defensive coordinator Wally Burnham made last year with USF. Last year, Burnham made $220,000 as USF’s defensive coordinator and Greg Gregory made $160,000 as USF’s offensive coordinator.
For those scoring at home (congrats). Here is the breakdown of the salaries of USF’s assistants.
2009-10 USF salaries
Offensive coordinator Mike Canales $200,000 (made $140,000 last year)
Defensive coordinator Joe Tresey $190,000
Co-DC/LBs coach David Blackwell $160,000
WRs coach Phil McGeoghan $80,000
—-
2008-09 USF salaries (2009-10 salaries have not been released)
RBs coach Carl Franks $150,000
Special teams coach John Hendrick $120,000
Co-OL coach Mike Simmonds $100,000
Co-OL coach Larry Scott $90,000
DL coach Kevin Patrick $70,000
That leaves $180,000 out of the $1.35 million assistants pool for 2009-10 for USF coach Jim Leavitt to split among the Bulls’ five other assistants from last season.
If you owned the purse strings, how would you divvy up the $180,000 between the remaining USF five assistants?

Brett,
Did you find out what Tresey’s previous salary was yet? While you’re at it, could you find out what Blackwell’s salary was?

I would take Canales to $190,000 where Tresey is. I would double Kevin Patrick’s salary. He did an outstanding job this year in coaching and recruiting.
Suggest removalTresey: $190
Canales: $190
Franks: $180
Blackwell:$160
Hendrick: $140
Patrick: $140
Simmonds: $140
Scott: $130
McGeoghan:$80

Smooth, I have not yet received that information on Tresey’s Cincinnati salary. I’ll check on Blackwell’s at Clemson.

I’d give a bunch to Patrick in recognition of his recruiting efforts, a bump for Franks as he’s the recruiting coordinator, and probably put Simmonds and Scott on equal footing.

Smooth, Blackwell’s salary info updated in post above - he made $142K each of the past two years (no raise)at Clemson. His salary for 2009-10 at Clemson had not been announced yet, but according to The State in Columbia, S.C., his duties as recruiting coordinator were removed last season.

Thanks Brett!
That’s a nice pay bump for Blackwell, and in this economy, 18K is certainly helpful…
But Brett when you think about the DC position its like having 350K devoted to 2 coordinators….instead of 200k devoted to OC….even though I’m sure Blackwell co-dc title is just a title, I’m sure Tresey will be the sole play caller on defense and was probably informed of this prior to the hire of Blackwell

Smooth, I understand your thinking, but Canales still the highest. If you considered combined salaries then last year, there was $310K for the offensive coordinators: Gregory and Canales, who was “pass game coordinator” and only $220K for defensive coordinator (Burnham).

I would give raises to those remaining to the tune of about $60k. I would then give back to the athletic dept. the other $120,000 (this year only). Next year I would have that money uncommitted incase more coaches leave.

I would give Patrick the biggest raise. Not only did he land several studs in recruiting this year, but he was also nationally recognized for his recruiting efforts. He could be a hot commodity next year.
I would give Patrick a $50,000 raise and try to sign him to a 2-year deal.
I know WVU signed several of its good recruiters to a 2 or 3-year deal.

Fans must rememner that our donations help with coach’s salaries. Larger donations can be paid quarterly.
Franks, Simmons & Patrick need to be rewarded.

I would slash Mike Simmonds’ salary until his offensive line actually starts pushing some opponents off the ball.

Patrick O’Rourke,
Suggest removalIf you want to slash salaries, you need to include Hendrick, the special teams coach. Our kickoff coverage sucked, and too mamy field goals blocked. No decent punt returns either.
Kevin Patrick definitely deserves the biggest increase. He’s goind a great job.
It was a tough process but CJL hired some good people.

I didn’t think assistants were signed to multi-year deals, I thought they were paid year to year.
Hendricks didn’t become special teams coach until later in the year, plus he is also the DTs coach while KP is the DE’s coach. Leavitt was coaching special teams in the beginning of the year….

How about in stead of raises we opt for bonuses for the assistant coaches. CJL gets one if we get to a bowl. Why not that or if a player gets All American, a player gets player of the week for the BE, player of the year, defensive or offensive rankings, make it directly important for the position coaches.

Finally, some money for the coaches…lets hope that keeps them motivated to get improvement, Canales at $200K is a joke, don’t think he is worth that, maybe 2nd time around he will make something happen…..

After a 2-5 season in the Big East, I wouldn’t give anyone a raise. They are lucky to have their jobs.
I’m glad ET is going to give more this year. I’m cutting mine back.
