Safety Switch?

Kalvin Pearson might have played his way into the starting lineup, while Jermaine Phillips might have played his way out.

Pearson replaced Phillips, the starting strong safety, for several defensive series against New Orleans on Sunday. Pearson, Phillips and LB Derrick Brooks tied for third on the team with five tackles apiece.

Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin wanted to look at the game tape before making any decisions on possible starting changes, but he informed Pearson early last week he would get playing time against the Saints.

Given the need to shake things up on defense, that playing time could increase.

“K.P. has practiced well and we do want to try to get our consistency level improved at the safety position overall as tacklers,” Coach Jon Gruden said.

Pearson played extensively in the preseason while starting free safety Will Allen nursed a broken thumb. Even if Pearson doesn’t become a starter, the Bucs are expected to rotate him into games on a regular basis, much like they did last season with their three safeties - Allen, Phillips and Dexter Jackson.

“I am not pointing fingers at anyone, but we have to find sure tacklers back there that bring us consistency on a game-by-game, snap-by-snap basis,” Gruden said. “At this stage, it is still an area that is obviously hurting us and we are concerned about.”

Thank God. I like what I’ve seen of KP. He brings hats to the party. He hit the NO fullback so hard on a lead play the other day, I’m surprised the FB is still alive.

I STILL THINK WE SHOULD HAVE SPENT THE MONEY AND GOT DWIGHT SMITH BACK(ANOTHER STOOPID DECISION WE DIDNT JUMP ON) ...BUT I AGREE THAT OUR YOUNGER PLAYERS ARE FINALLY STEPPING UP.PEARSON IS GOING TO BE GOOD IN THIS DEFENSE.LETS JUST HOPE THE REST OF THE D WAKES UP THIS SEASON,BUT WITH BROOKS CALLING A MEETING WITH ONLY DEFENSIVE PLAYERS, IM SURE MR.DERRICK BROOKS GAVE HIM A GOOD PIECE OF HIS MIND AND THE TAMPA BAY FAITHFUL WILL SEE A DIFFERENT TEAM THIS WEEKNED AT HOME…GO BUCS

I’ve never been one to see things through so called “rose-colored” glasses, so here it goes.  You won’t win when you have defensive linemen (Booger, Simeon to name a few) who can’t get to the quarterback of opposing offenses unless they were presented a party invitation.  Simeon, please stop telling folks to watch you shine.  A rock is a rock even if it dreams of diamond aspirations.  You will certainly get any quarterback seriously injured if you continue to bury your head in the sand and let Kenyatta “Hands to the Face” Walker watch (Look closely at the game tapes, both pre-season & regular season) allow defensive linemen, linebackers, etc. run past you with nary an attempt to block anyone.
