PORT CHARLOTTE—Three at-bats, two home runs. Suffice to say, infielder Sean Rodriguez is off to a good start with the Rays this spring.
Rodriguez, one of the players the Rays got from the Angels for pitcher Scott Kazmir last August, hit a holo home run in the seventh inning in Tampa Bay’s 12-2 loss to Baltimore on Wednesday, and he hit a two-run shot in the second inning today against the Orioles. This one got a little help from the wind and landed the bullpen beyond right field.
The Orioles have an early home run of their own. Felix Pie led off the game with a shot off Jeff Niemann to give the Orioles seven home runs of the Rays in nine innings plus one batter.
Niemann, the starting rotation’s most pleasant surprise last season, pitched two innings and allowed just the one hit and run.
