ST. PETERSBURG The Rays placed seldom-used outfielder Justin Ruggiano on the disabled list today with bursitis in his left knee and recalled shortstop Reid Brignac from Durham.
Brignac was sent down on July 23 to clear room on the roster for Desmond Jennings, who became the Rays everyday left fielder that night.
Brignac was batting .193 at the time of his demotion. He had lost his job and was sharing time at short with Elliot Johnson. The idea was get Birgnac to play every day at Durham with the hope he would regain some form at the plate.
Brignac hit .231 in 11 games with the Bulls.
Ruggiano became the odd man out when Jennings was recalled since they are both right-handed hitters. He appeared in five of the Rays last 20 games, making only two starts.
Ruggiano, recalled May 20 to replace Dan Johnson, hit .372 in his first 14 games but cooled off considerably. While he is batting .255 for the season, he is hitting just .157 in his last 24 games.
