TAMPA - RSL Florida boys under-18 squad eased to victory in its opening game of the Club Directors League with a 6-0 win against Black Watch. Dan Meacock scored twice as RSL notched five second half goals.

Brendan Howard had given RSL a 1-0 lead late in the first half, and RSL doubled its lead early in the second half when Kyle Sims was brought down in the penalty area. Dami Phillips converted the penalty with a low shot to the left.

Meacock then scored twice in quick succession before Juan Arbelaez and Ryan Asare-Bediako also scored. Meacock, who was playing only his second competitive game with the team, was pleased with his and the teams’ performance.

“There’s nothing better than winning your first game to show any other team looking at us that we’re gonna be one of the top teams in the league,” Meacock said. “We definitely picked it up in the second half. We changed it about a little bit during halftime. We realised what we needed to do, and we got it done.”

Black Watch was missing some of its players, and had some very tired legs on the field at the end of the game. Coach Rich Rodrigues was pleased with his teams’ effort, and the way they played in the first half.

“For a start we were missing three defenders, and we had a player accepted to college so he’s started college, he’s gone” Rodrigues said. “We played a good first half, it was only 1-0 when we let in a ball on a set-piece, and we were more compact in the first half. In the second half we got tired and defensively we broke down. I’m still pleased, we got our fitness in, and we’ll move on from here.”

RSL’s girls under-18 team win against Black Watch followed a similar pattern. Holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, RSL scored four goals in the second half to cruise to victory. Chelsea Klotz, who will play for Tampa Prep this season, had a hat trick and Elaine Chavez and Katie Kent both added goals.

With RSL having had three weeks off since its last competitive match, Klotz and her teammates were happy to get back out on the field.

“We’re such a tight team we come back together and it’s like we were never apart,” Klotz said. “Soccer’s all of our lives, so we don’t want too much time off. It was really good to be out here playing.”
