Jay Evans walked onto the tennis court today for his match against Blake High School and for the first time in a while, he was able to concentrate solely on his game.
That’s because the Robinson No. 1 singles player wasn’t worrying about where he was going to play college tennis. Evans committed to Piedmont College, a Division III program in Georgia. He chose Piedmont over Oglethorpe University, Warner University and Lenoir-Rhyne University, among others.
“They’re a rebuilding program that is bringing in five freshmen next year and I wanted to be a part of that,” Evans said. “I wanted to stay somewhat close to home. It’s a small school and I felt the size of the campus was something to look forward to and I really liked the coaching.”
Evans, who helped his Robinson team finish third in the district last season, didn’t begin playing tennis until his freshman season.
“I was a golfer and on a a whim, I decided to try tennis,” Evans said. “I really enjoy it. I can go out there and take out my stress on the court.”
