Road trip, interleague play wrapping up

PITTSBURGH—The Rays have a chance to lock down a 5-1 road trip with a win in today’s series finale.

The weather is fine right now, but the National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for a wide area that includes Pittsburgh and it looks like some nasty stuff is on the way. Might be kind of an on-and-off thing this afternoon.

The Rays’ lineup today includes Shawn Riggans and Jonny Gomes. The fine people at Stats, Inc. inform us that Gomes’ homer on the 15th pitch of an at-bat last night was a first in Rays history. Jorge Cantu homered on the 13th pitch of an AB on Aug. 29, 2006. Gomes also became the first player to homer on the 15th pitch or later since Montreal’s Termel Sledge did it on the 16th pitch on July 7, 2004. Not bad.

In rehab news, Al Reyes threw another bullpen session and is close to going out on a rehab assignment, according to Joe Maddon. And Rocco Baldelli is slated to wrap up his current stint with Vero by DHing today before being reevaluated tomorrow. Baldelli had indicated he might move up a level or two after that and Maddon said that’s a possibility.

Finally, we pass along our condolences to Cliff Floyd. His grandmother passed away and he’s headed home to Chicago later today. He is expected to be at the Trop in time for tomorrow night’s game.

Longoria 3B
