A few days ago, Stuart Sternberg talked about being in a spending mood, B.J. Upton’s name was being tossed about in trade rumors and fans were penciling Cliff Lee’s name into the Rays’ starting rotation.
Things can change quickly in baseball, as reports swirled about the Yankees and Mariners nearing a deal to bring the 31-year-old left-hander to New York.
ESPN and the New York Post were among the outlets reporting the deal was about done, although there still appeared to be room for another team to jump in with a better offer.
Seattle apparently wants to get a deal done quickly, putting pressure on other possible suitors.
In addition to the Yankees, the Rays, Twins, Rangers and Reds were reportedly interested in Lee.
The key to the Yankees’ deal is said to be their inclusion of catcher prospect Jesus Montero.
Lee is 8-3 with a 2.34 ERA, 89 strikeouts and six walks this season. Ironically, he’s scheduled to start tonight against the Yankees.
There is also talk the Rays could be a player for Phillies slugger Jayson Werth. A few outlets, including the New York Post, say the Phillies could shop Werth if they fall farther out of the playoff chase. Werth will be a free agent next season. The Yankees and Red Sox are reportedly in the mix, too.
