ST. PETERSBUERG The Rays have completed the trade for right-handed reliever Chad Qualls, sending a player to be named later to the Diamondbacks.
Qualls will join the team in time for tonight’s game with the Yankees, so the Rays will have to clear room in the bullpen, with Andy Sonnanstine or Lance Cormier the likely candidates to be moved. Obtaining Qualls could be the first step toward making another move. They now can include a bullpen arm in a trade for a hitter, like Adam Dunn of the Nationals.
The non-waiver trade deadline ends today at 4 p.m.
The 31-year-old Qualls is 1-4 this season with an 8.29 ERA in 38 innings over 43 appearances.
Right-handers are batting .348 against him. Lefties are batting .380.
He began the season as the Diamondbacks closer and was 12-for-20 in save opportunities.
Qualls did pitch in the postseason with Astros in 2004 and 2005.
