ST. PETERSBURG—The Rays and third baseman Evan Longoria have reached agreement on a long-term contract that could keep him in a Rays uniform through the 2016 season and pay him as much as $44 million.
The deal is worth a guaranteed $17.5 million. The team has a one-year option for 2014 and a subsequent two-year option for 2015-16. If all options are picked up, it would be a nine-year contract, the longest in team history.
Here’s a statement from executive vice president Andrew Friedman, issued in the team’s news release: “In his first two years in professional baseball, Evan has displayed the talent, work ethic and maturiy that we envisioned when we drafted him in 2006. The fans of Tampa Bay should be excited to know that Evan will be in a Rays uniform for at least the next nine seasons. It is another demonstration of our commitment to developing and retaining our burgeoning group of talented players.”
Longoria, 22, was Tampa Bay’s first-round pick out of Long Beach State in the 2006 draft. He was called up six games ago to replace injured Willy Aybar (hamstring) at third.

He better improve his defensive skills.
Errors he has made have lost them games.

Wonder how BJ. Upton is feeling right about now!

Wow really? I didn’t know Tampa still had a team. Oh, there they are, sitting at the bottom of the rankings… Not having that cool name anymore and constantly being at bottom of the league instantly makes me think we should build them a second stadium. Let’s not forget, the devil rays are undefeated in the playoffs. (Technicality, because they’ve never made the playoffs once in franchise history…)

Fantastic news! Much like when the Bucs made it in their breakout year of 1997, the Rays are signing their future stars to keep them here in the Bay area intime for the team to mature.
Well done Rays management.

I don’t see them sending him down now. He’s here to stay. THANK YOU RAYS

We may not be here in 9 years! We want to win now! Stop signing all these young guys and trade for players that are producing now! Also, the last time I looked we don’t have a problem scoring runs, it’s been pitching! We need starters, relievers, and a closer and please find someone who throws harder than 85mph.
BRING THE RAYS TO A REAL CITY!!! TAMPA!!
Nobody wants to play in front of a bunch of BINGO ALLSTARS!
