Freedom High grad Matt Campbell was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 43rd round (1,297th overall) of Wednesday’s MLB draft.
Campbell is a junior right-handed pitcher the Florida Gators roster, having earned his spot on the team after excelling for Florida’s club team in 2009, where he earned National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) first team All-American honors after going 7-1 with a 0.16 ERA while helping the Gators win the South Atlantic South Conference Championship.
Campbell has made seven appearances this season for the Gators, who host Miami in an NCAA Super Regional this weekend. He is 0-0 with a 9.64 ERA in 9 1/3 innings pitched.
