David Price has a chance tonight to pitch the Rays back to the postseason
ROGER MOONEY
ST. PETERSBURG A little more intrigue here during the final day (days?) of the regular season.
The Red Sox are scrambling to find someone to start a possible playoff game Thursday with the Rays, which will become a reality if the teams remained tied after tonight’s action.
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX, the Red Sox are trying land Bruce Chen from the Royals. Chen will be the ultimate rent-an-arm since he won’t be eligible for the postseason roster.
Chen, 12-8 with a 3.98 ERA this season, is 1-1 with an 0.92 ERA in six appearances (two starts) against the Rays from 2007 to 2010. Chen did not face them this season.
The Rays could throw Jeff Niemann in the playoff game since it would be his scheduled day to pitch. Or, they could run out rookie Matt Moore, who struck out 11 Yankees in five innings during his lone start of the season.
That could all be moot if the Rays win tonight and the Red Sox lose. Or, if the Sox win and the Rays lose.
If the tie atop the Wild Card standings is broken tonight, the first-place team advances to the American League Division Series, which begins Friday in either Arlington or Detroit.
It’s David Price against Yankees rookie right-hander Dellin Betances, who will likely be the first of a handful of Yankees pitchers to throw tonight.
