Jason Bay scored on a sacrifice fly by Jed Lowrie in the top of the fifth inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 1-0 lead over the Rays in Game 1 of the ALCS tonight at Tropicana Field.
Bay walked to open the inning and went to third on a double by Mark Kotsay. That was just the third hit allowed by Rays starter James Shields, but Boston made it count when Lowrie lifted a fly ball to right field that easily scored Bay, acquired from Pittsburgh after the Red Sox traded Manny Ramirez in July, one out later.
The Rays went down in order in the bottom of the fifth. Jason Bartlett was caught looking at a called third strike for the second out, giving Daisuke Matszake eight strikeouts for the game and keeping his no-hitter intact.
