While Joe Maddon had issues with home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt’s strike zone, the Rays still had plenty of opportunities in Friday’s 4-3 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

The Rays stole a season-high seven bases, but were 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Here are some notes from a tough night, a loss that dropped the Rays to four back of the Red Sox in the Wild Card with 12 games left to play.

—James Shields lost for the first time since losing a complete-game in the first game of a double header at Fenway Park. He was 4-0 since then with two more complete games.

Shields is 2-3 with a 3.29 ERA in five starts against the Red Sox this season.

—Evan Longoria drove in all three runs. He hit a two-run homer in the first, his 28th of the season, and had an RBI single in the third.

Longoria has 17 home runs since the All-Star Break.

He has 12 RBI this season against Boston.

—Johnny Damon stole three bases, matching his career-high. His only other three stolen base games came against the Rays – in 2000 while with Kansas City and in 2006 while with the Yankees.

—Desmond Jennings had three hits for only his second multi-hit game in his last 17 games.

—B.J. Upton stole his 30th base of the year. With 21 home runs, Upton is the first player in team history to hit 20 home runs and steal 30 bases.
