In a span of two days this week, USF doubled the number of verbal commitments it has received for the 2011 recruiting class.
Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson running back Willie Davis is one of the two new verbal commitments, joining Tallahassee Lincoln safety Chris Garye Jr.
The previous commitments are WR Alex Mut of Port Charlotte and LB/DB Rontavious Atkins of Pahokee. (On a personal note, Rontavaious has the best name so far).
I caught up with both Davis and Garye Jr. earlier this week.
Here is a short Q&A with Davis, who made an unofficial visit to USF last weekend:
Q: What did you like about USF from what you saw last weekend?
A: The facilities, the coaches, and some of the players. I felt comfortable there.
Q: Had you ever met Coach Holtz prior to last weekend?
A: No I hadn’t.
Q: How would you describe yourself as a player for fans who have never seen you play?
A: I’m a running back that can give you everything that a running back can possibly give you: power, speed, agility, quickness, endurance. I just try to be an all-around threat coming out of the backfield.
Q: Have you spent much time in Tampa?
A: No, that was my first time being down there, period.
Q: You committed early. What is your outlook for the rest of the recruiting process?
A: I really wanted to get it over with to tell the truth. I wanted to commit silently to the coaches and on signing day let everyone else know.
Q: Do you have a football role model?
A: I actually do, the late-and-great Walter Peyton. That’s who I idolize a lot. I really try to emulate my running style off him.
