Receiver Cortez Hankton To Re-Sign With Buccaneers

Posted Mar 5, 2009 by Anwar S. Richardson

Updated Mar 5, 2009 at 11:36 AM

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Cortez Hankton is going to sign a one-year deal to remain with his team today. Harold Lewis, Hankton’s agent, said he expects his client reviewed the offer and expects to sign it sometime today.

Hankton, an unrestricted free agent, spent last season on injured reserve after suffering a sports hernia injury.

He originally entered the NFL an undrafted free agent from Texas Southern in 2003. Hankton played four seasons for Jacksonville and has 34 receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns in his career.

Hankton was released by Minnesota prior to the 2007 and signed with Tampa Bay prior to last season.

With Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton expected to start this season, Hankton will have a shot to compete for playing time in 2009.

Bucs still have Clarke, Warren and now Hankton as reserves. Warren would make a great possession receiver if he is recovered from his ankle injury. Both Clarke and Hankton showed ability to catch the football but were never able to start. We need a WR at no. 19 provide Harvin or Heyward-Bey are available. Bucs may need to move up to 16 or lower to get a blue-chip. DL, Bucs should have signed Tank Johnson. Duminik what is wrong with you?

Hahahahahaha.  Ahem….errrr…..

One of the following is true.

A. The Bucs are not getting interest from the big names in free agency even though they are trying.

B. The Bucs are cheap.

C. The Bucs are clueless and have no PR understanding at all.

D.  They still expect to make a splash.

Three of the four options are bad.  Fingers crossed, but cynicism is setting in.

When this headline popped up this morning, I never thought it would be our big splash for the day.  I guess I need to learn to lower my expectations everyday.  Didn’t they say they would get to work on the D?  Let’s see it.  You already missed out on all of the WRs-other than the mighty Cortez-so get to work on CB while there’s a good one left and DT while there are still two possibilities.  I bet Henderson is making less than Clayton.  They need to get their priorities straight.  A fast WR without great hands or a slow WR without great hands?  I guess we’re the one team that values blocking in a WR over most anything else.  They need to value it a bit more in TEs.

Brent Carver is exactly right, but it doesn’t stop there.  I heard Joseph has really soft hands for a OG and Talib is ambidextrious.  He can throw with either hand while standing on water OR land!

This team is a J O K E.

Put the dented cans back Dominik! My patience has ran out. Time for new owners. Please sell the team and get out of Tampa and England. These owners have wrecked the BEST soccer franchise Ever and now its our turn. Thanks Glazers for being the best ever! I am embarressed to call myself a Bucs fan.

man first of all, all you bus fan in here bashing domin. and raheem needs to get a grip, ever since the start of FA, all you people just been wanting big names, theres a team call the cowboys for people like ya, jump on there band wagon, now its fair that some people are angry and frustrated by the decisions that the bucs been making, but give some of these guys a shot at showing all of us what they can do, when the season starts if the team play good all you same people that are bashing those guys well be the same one cheering for them, people are so fake, only cheer when there good, and dnt know who they are when there bad…true bucs fan for life…i see the bucs winning at least 10 games this year.

None of you are true Bucs fans if you jump ship a week into FA. The Bucs have tried to bring in big names, but they have come short. Haynesworth, IMO, is not worth 100 mil. We got Ward and Winslow, two real good offensive players. Bates has turned every defense into a top 10, so I’m not too worried. The only cut from black Wednesday that I didn’t understand was Cato June, but the other guys were past their prime. True, it wasn’t nice how they did it, but its time to move on. Now if your a real Bucs fan, then shut up and stop acting like your a football analyst, cause you wouldn’t be posting here if you were. Give it time, and I think the Bucs wil be better than before.

Maybe we will get Lucky and Hankton will beat out Clayton for the starting WR and we can recoop some of the 25 million waste of money. How fast is Hankton ? Sure wish the Bucs whould ‘ve pursued Henderson or N Washington a little harder.

Hey Joe…When you have $40 million to spend under the cap, you don’t finish 2nd or “almost” bring players in. You sign them. Dominot-Pioli doesn’t know what he’s doing. If they have thrown in the towel for the year, then they need to just tell us that. They would look a lot less….unqualified. I don’t know a lot about anything, but I know football. By the way , Hankton won’t be with the team when the real games start in Sept., barring injury to one of our other mediocre receivers. You heard it here, Joe.
