Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Cortez Hankton is going to sign a one-year deal to remain with his team today. Harold Lewis, Hankton’s agent, said he expects his client reviewed the offer and expects to sign it sometime today.
Hankton, an unrestricted free agent, spent last season on injured reserve after suffering a sports hernia injury.
He originally entered the NFL an undrafted free agent from Texas Southern in 2003. Hankton played four seasons for Jacksonville and has 34 receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns in his career.
Hankton was released by Minnesota prior to the 2007 and signed with Tampa Bay prior to last season.
With Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton expected to start this season, Hankton will have a shot to compete for playing time in 2009.

I’m sorry, but I’ve still never even heard of this guy. That’s not a name I would forget, either. Hard to get excited about, but will be easy when and if he shows us the TDs.

Yet another big name FA signing by the Bucs.
With all the $ the Glazers will be saving on the Bucs this year, Manchester United should be able to raise their 08’ team salary above the $93M GBP ($130M USD) mark for this year.
The Glazers are crooks and the local media is too chicken to make it an issue. Hope you enjoyed the free buffet at last year’s games and all the freebies coming to you this season Roy & Anwar.

Have him line up next to Clayton and he can catch the balls that bounce off of Clayton’s hands!

Who the heck is Cortez Hankton. I watch every Bucs game and I do not remember this name.

Who?? What?? I see we signed a kicker… A KICKER???!? Do these new idiots have access to the same team WE wasted our money on last year?? One and done for these two morons, and we’re in the Tim Tebow derby. We need the most help on defense (all over the field, on defense) and now do not have our 2nd round draft pick, traded (and gave up too much, by the way) for a tight-end who has played in less than 50% of the ballgames, since he was drafted, and TE being another position of strength. I rate Hankton right up there with Clayton…below average. At least Clayton will be making about $750,000 a catch, huh? Or $2 mil. a touchdown catch. Unbelievable. I’m embarrassed to be a Bucfan right now.

I don’t think Morris was Defensive Co-ordinator long enough (3 hours), to realize just how bad our defense is, even with Buchanon (mediocre), Brooks (old) and Phillips (who wasn’t always the greatest cover guy). Add Barber (too old and now toast…should have retired) and Ruud (too slow to be a dominant force in the middle, in the NFL), Hovan and a gaping hole left when Warren Sapp was CUT (not Haye leaving…big deal), and we have a recipe for one of the worst seasons in franchise history. I’m glad one of us is paying attention, most importantly the one that matters most to my wallet…me! I can’t wait for this failed Coach/GM dog-and-pony show to start. The sooner it does, the sooner it’s over.

Jim Kinzer: +1
Hankton was a practice squad player last year. He had a good training camp, but not good enough to beat out Clayton.
Suggest removalPor (:PapaJohn) on March 05, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Clayton expected to start? Great. 2 TDs in the last 4 seasons and the Bucs gave him $25M.
I guess since he caught 1 TD last season, he won’t be due again until 2010.

Everybodys bashing clayton and rightfully so, but clayton is one the best blocking WR in the league. he’s a terror on tape. His receiving production needs to pick up drastically though

This is just sad…... Get some decent players signed Dominik. Everyone is losing patience with your decisions.

The best thing that will happen is we can go back to getting discount tickets before a game from ticket holder who no longer want to go,ah yes, remember the bad old days. But then again, we will not have sell-outs so the games will be blacked out and we won’t have to watch a bunch of losers for the next few years.
Suggest removalHere’s a rumor that’s worth starting… the Glazers will be selling the team to Eddie DeBartlo.

Look out NFC South - Cortez Hankton is in Tampa Bay to stay!

It’s off to the SB now. It looks like our default formation may have to be a 3 TE set with Bryant and Graham. They need to at least add Stevens to give us another big target at TE.
Suggest removalPat, there are plenty of players who deserve some criticism on our team. Ruud isn’t one of them. The guy was 4th in the league in tackles last year, but you say he can’t be dominant force in the middle? How is that? He’s done a fine job thus far. The only MLBs on his level are Willis and Beason in the NFC. We have a few other good D players, too.
Por (ref813) on March 05, 2009 (Suggest removal)
It’s getting hard to decide which is our bigger need, WR or DT. They need to grab Tank or Igor so we can get Bey in the 1st. When an older Holt is the best available WR, it’s time to fill other needs through FA and draft the fast WR we lack. Bryant has decent speed. I’d feel better about our O if we had more than one WR who could start for most teams.
Suggest removalI’ve heard of this Hankton character, but I’ve never seen him in a uniform, let alone on the field. 2 WRs isn’t going to do it. Unless Mo learns to play WR finally, we only have 2 who could start on the roster. Wait, I almost forgot about the CFL star we signed a few weeks ago. That should solve the problem.
Por (:PapaJohn) on March 05, 2009 (Suggest removal)
The Glazers want “yes men” running the show and apparently they got them in Morris & Dominik.
The two newbies will do whatever is needed to keep their jobs. Their “plan” is simple - reduce operation costs.

Heyward-Bey would be a good pick at 19 if he were there. At 6’2” running the fastest time at the combine I don’t think he’ll be there at pick 19. We’ll have to pick someone else and I don’t think Percy Harvin is the player we need either. We need a Defensive Tackle for the first pick. Use the thrid pick, because we traded awya #2, to pick a receiver. We really need to consider brining in Byron leftwich as insurance at QB.

i know its really hard for you to understand right now, but this isnt as bad as you think. the bucs biggest problem last year was that we were too old, and our young players didnt step up enough. i still think we have a good young core group of players and arent that far from being good. there is still plenty of time to improve the depth and role players on this team. i strongly believe the most important thing is building through the draft, developing players, and coaching. its too early to tell so stop knocking these guys for not letting our cap situation burn a hole in our pockets for mediocre free agents. let them take their time and give them a chance to build. champions arent made over night. GO BUCS!

Is that all they could come up with is Hankton..lol Even when Nate Washington and Laverneous Coles where avalibable at the time. Yep that comfirms it they are planning for the 1st pick of the draft next season. ” TIM TEBOW ” is the first that comes to mind.

I believe our first draft pick at #19 should really be drafted in the 7th round instead like another long snapper…They are that stupid !!

Pat Yasinskas responded to a blog question which provided this nice insight. I wish Roy, Ira, & Anwar could provide us with this info. Maybe that is why Pat is now at ESPN.
Yasinskas: Good question about the salary cap and a lot of people are wondering about that. First, let’s clear up one misconception that’s out there. I know a lot of people think the Bucs are being “cheap.” But I don’t think you truly can make that argument because, aside from there being a salary cap, there’s also a salary floor. The salary cap is $127 million, but every NFL team must use a minimum of $111 against the salary cap…It’s still early in the process and I anticipate the Bucs making some more significant moves that will eat into that cap money.

Looks like the old buckos are shopping at the dollar store again….The Bucs have made a splash in free agency but unfortunately they dove head first into a mud hole. Maybe if we were to change the name to Manchester United we could spend some money. I suppose next thing is the players will have to bring their own beer and sandwiches for the plane ride…..

The bucs need Roy Williams!Let jermaine phillips go and land a true playmaker in williams!Raheem could easily convince him to make the jump to the bucs, being a former db coach!
