PORT CHARLOTTE - Ben Zobrist checked into the Rays’ spring training clubhosue this morning with four gloves and a willingness to play whereever the Rays need him.
Zobrist sounded like he would jump at the chance to lock down the everyday second baseman’s job, but he made it clear he’s willing to continue in a super utility role that would also include work in the outifield and at shortstop.
He said he took a month off during the offseason and that when he did return to his training regimen, he didn’t try to change anything.
Check back in a bit for a story.
With Zobrist in the hosue, only first baseman Carlos Pena and infielder Sean Rodriguez are outstanding. Team physicals and the first full-squad workout are Wednesday.
