NEW YORK It’s a hazy morning here in the Bronx, and, because it has been this way each time the Rays have played here this summer, there is a threat of rain in the afternoon, which, if it happens, will really mess with today’s busy schedule.
The Rays and Yankees are preparing for a day/night doubleheader.
After a little post-game mystery Tuesday night concerning today’s starters, the Rays are sticking with the original plan of James Shields in the afternoon game and Jeremy Hellickson at night.
No word yet on who the Yankees are going to start this afternoon.
They scheduled Phil Hughes for Game 1 and CC Sabathia for Game 2, but there was some question Tuesday if Hughes would be able to make the start because of back spasms.
The Rays begin the day two games behind the Red Sox in the Wild Card standings and can move to half a game with a sweep and another Red Sox loss or fall to 3 1/23 back if they get swept and the Red Sox win.
Or, they can pick up half a game or drop two 2 ½ games back if they split.
