NEW YORK Big series, these three games with the Yankees.
The Rays, 8 ½ in back of the Yankees in the Wild Card standings, have a chance to make up ground on the Bombers this weekend at Yankee Stadium.
It starts tonight with David Price vs. CC Sabathia in a battle of lefties.
Sabathia is vying for the major league-lead in wins. He has 16. Justin Verlander has 17.
Price? He’s looking to get a win.
The 2010 AL Cy Young runner-up is 9-10 this season, having won once in his last six starts. Not entirely his fault though. Price has received only 1.46 runs per nine innings during his past four starts.
Still, he has not been close to what he was last season, and hitters are suddenly taking him deep. Price has allowed nine home runs in his last seven starts after allowing nine in his first 17.
Also there is this: The Rays are 12-12 in his 24 starts this season. They were 38-16 in Price’s first 54 starts.
So, if the Rays are going to use this weekend to take a chunk out of the Yankees lead, a good night by Price would be a good start.
