The Rays plan to make Tim Beckham the top overall pick in today’s draft.
The Griffin (Ga.) High shortstop will be the Rays’ first high school selection with their No. 1 pick since Delmon Young (who also went first overall) in 2003.
As of last night, the Rays said they were down to Beckham and Florida State catcher Buster Posey. Of the two, Posey was considered the “safer” pick and the player closer to the majors but Beckham was seen as having a higher ceiling, with more potential to become a star player.

I understand that Buster Posey also wanted 12M to sign. So it makes more sence to take Tim Beckham and spend the 12M on someone we can use NOW. Let’s face it, 4 years from now we will need a new SS.

This is baseball…not the NFL or the NBA. In baseball you do not draft for need, you draft the best player. Most have said the Beckham is the top overall talent in this draft.

Don’t fool around here. Draft Bustyer Posey, this guy is the safest bet. He can play any position.

Not one Scout or Sports Writer has projected Buster Posey to be a 5 tool player but most have labeled Tim Beckham all that and more. Always pick the best.

You know, I really had thought the “Rays” had changed their ways, with the Price pick last season and Longoria the year before. Price, a guy who will be -by all accounts- will be in the majors sooner, rather than later.(Longoria already there). This season drafting a High School SS who may see the majors in 5 or 6 years over a Catcher who could be up in 2 just seems like a step backwards toward what the old regime did. Need or not, THE RAYS HAVE ZERO CATCHING PROSPECTS WHO ARE AS GOOD AS POSEY….
So what does this mean for Reid Brignac?

I hope the Rays are picking the best player. Posey was a safe pick and I would have been very happy with it. He seems to be a quality person as well as an outstanding player.
I was hoping the best player would be a high school player. The Rays will not be picking high again, and they seem to already have all positions covered. Picking a player who will be in the majors in a couple of years seems a waste to me. By picking a HS player, he will be coming up as we have a need at SS.
Reid Brignac can still have a place with the Rays.

With Bartlett at SS now, and Beckham drafted 1st overall today, you may see Reid Brignac moved to 2nd base to replace Aki in a couple of years.
Reid is good defensively at SS and would make an excellent defensive 2nd baseman with a very big bat for that position.
I love what the Rays did today, and what can still happen with Reid!
With a 24 year old Dionar Navarro, and Riggans in his late 20’s, we have no need for another catcher at the Major League level for quite a while.
