ST. PETERSBURG As expected center fielder B.J. Upton is not in the lineup tonight.
Upton said an MRI this morning did not show any damage to his right shoulder, which he strained during the eighth inning of Monday’s loss while trying to reach for a baseball lined into the right-center field gap by Delmon Young.
“I’m day-to-day,” he said.
Upton hasn’t tried swinging a bat yet, so he’s not sure if he can pinch-hit tonight, but said he can pinch-run.
He doesn’t know if he will be in the lineup Wednesday night but to get in there but hopes to get in there by the end of the homestand, which ends with Thursday afternoon’s game.
The Rays begin the day 7 ½ games back of the Wild Card-leading Red Sox, who are in Arlington playing the Rangers. The Yankees, who hold a one-game lead on the Red Sox, play host to the A’s.
Monday’s loss stopped the Rays five-game winning streak and denied them a chance to pick up a game on the Red Sox.
Here is the Rays lineup:
Jennings CF
Damon DH
Longoria 3B
Zobrist RF
Joyce LF
Kotchman 1B
Rodriguez 2B
Shoppach C
Brignac SS
