ST. PETERSBURG Can James “Complete Game” Shields follow the lead set Sunday by Jeremy Hellickson?
We’ll find out when Shields faces the Rangers this afternoon in the first game of this three-game series against the AL West front runners.
Hellickson threw less than 100 pitches in his four-hit, complete-game victory against the Orioles.
Shields leads the majors with 10 complete games. He worked eight scoreless innings against the Rangers last Wednesday in Texas. He needs one more victory to tie his career-high for wins at 14 set in 2008.
Johnny Damon, who took a pitch off his right leg Sunday, is not in the lineup today but is available for pinch-hit duties later on if needed.
Desmond Jennings will serve as the designated hitter, and Justin Ruggiano will get the start in right field.
