Rays vs. Jays, lineups and pre-game update

By TONY FABRIZIO

TORONTO - Manager Joe Maddon said the decision on whether to place first baseman Carlos Pena on the 15-day disabled list came down to whether the Rays wanted to try go get him 100 percent healthy for the season’s final seven weeks or have him hobbled for the next two months.

By sidelining Pena through a six-game road trip that opens tonight against the Blue Jays, the Rays believe they’ll be giving Pena’s right foot injury time to heal. Pena could return for the home game Aug. 16 against Texas, because his DL stint is retroactive to Aug. 1.

The Rays are calling Pena’s injury a sprain of the right plantar fascia, but Pena said he tore the ligament while running the bases July 31 against the Yankees. A tear can actually expedite the healing of a a plantar fascia injury, Pena said he was told.

Pena said he “wasn’t too happy” when the Rays approached him about going on the DL, but after they made their case, he saw the logic.

“The key is, the doctor mentioned, if I were to play at 75 percent, I was going to have to use other muscles to protect my injury, and that is very dangerous,” Pena said. “When they put it that way, I ‘m like, ‘I don’t have a choice, I guess.’ “

Another consideration is that the Rays needed another arm in the bullpen if newly recalled first baseman Dan Johnson was going to stay up. Dale Thayer got the call, but he could replaced as early as Saturday by Andy Sonnanstine.
