ST. PETERSBURG Kyle Farnsworth will miss at least two days before the Rays reevaluate his tender right elbow. Joe Maddon said he hopes Farnsworth will be ready to pitch when the Rays reach Boston on Thursday.
“That would be great,” Maddon said. “Kyle’s pretty tough. We’ll see how it works out.”
In the meantime it will be closer by committee.
Maddon said in a perfect world he would set things up for Joel Peralta to work the ninth, and Peralta, perfect this season in two opportunities in that role, said he’s ready if called.
Maddon, added, he won’t run away from using Peralta earlier if need be.
Of course, a typical outing this afternoon by James Shields will make those decisions easy for Maddon.
Shields, who leads the major leagues with 11 complete games, will try to complete this three-game sweep against the Red Sox and move the Rays to within 3 ½ games of the Wild Card-leaders.
He will be opposed by 15-game winner Jon Lester.
