ST. PETERSBURG - Top prospect Jeremy Hellickson will make his major league debut for the Rays tonight against the Twins without long reliever Andy Sonnanstine backing him up.
To make room for Hellickson on the roster, the Rays placed Sonnanstine on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring pull, restroactive all the way to July 23.
First baseman Carlos Pena and right fielder Carlos Pena are out of the lineup again, but the Twins are without Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau in their starting lineup.
Zobrist hit off the tee and did some other work today and said his stiff lower back is doing better. He said he might even be able to pinch-hit tongiht and return to the lineup tomorrow. Manager Joe Maddon said it’s a stretch Zobrist could start tomorrow.
Pena (sore right foot) didn’t make himself available to the media, and Maddon didn’t know much about his status because he was still receiving treatment.
Maddon said Hellickson, who leads the Triple-A International League in wins (12), ERA (2.45) and strikeouts (123), will be on a 100- to 105-pitch count limit. That isn’t much of a limit, of course.
