ST. PETERSBURG B.J. Upton is not in tonight’s lineup. The center fielder said he has yet to attempt a throw with his right arm, the shoulder of which he strained Monday night.
Upton said he will throw before Thursday afternoon’s game and hopes to return to the lineup when the team opens a four-game series Friday in Toronto.
Radio broadcaster Andy Freed will not work tonight’s game due to an illness. It is the first game Freed has missed this season. Orestes Destrade will join Dave Willis in the both.
Wade Davis will try to snap the Rays two-game losing streak, but the pitching hasn’t been the problem during the team’s losses to the Tigers during the first two games of this four-game series.
It’s the hitting, or lack of it. Or, more specifically, the lack of timely hitting. The Rays stranded 12 runners and were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position during their 2-1 loss Tuesday.
The Rays begin the day 8 ½ back of the Yankees and Red Sox who are both tied for the division and Wild Card lead. The Rays have 35 games left in the regular season.
Not only are they trying to catch one of those two teams, time is also their enemy.
Here are the lineups:
