KISSIMMEE—Behind the solid work of RHP James Shields, the Rays are leading the Houston Astros 3-0 after four innings at Osceola County Stadium.
Shields, Tampa Bay’s Opening-Day starter, has allowed three hits with no walks and two strikeouts. He’s scheduled to go about 105 pitches, which, at this rate, could put him into the eighth inning. Shields will pitch in a minor-league game next week before taking the hill on April 6 against the Baltimore Orioles at Tropicana Field.
The Rays have five hits through four innings, two of them by 2B Elliot Johnson. And speaking of Elliot Johnson, he made a brilliant play to cap the fourth, when he went deep in the hole to rob Chris Shelton of a hit. Johnson’s one-bounce throw was scooped expertly by 1B Carlos Pena.
Again, after four innings, it’s Rays 3, Astros 0.
