Joaquin Benoit returns this spring to a familiar place: the ballfields that are now the Charlotte Sports Park.
The right-hander, who spent 1999 pitching for the old Charlotte Rangers in the FSL and parts of eight seasons with the Rangers, signed a minor league contract with the Rays on Monday that includes an invite to major league camp.
The 32-year-old Benoit missed all of 2009 as he rehabed from rotator cuff surgery.
He was 30-26 with eight saves and a 2.85 ERA during his Rangers career.
The Rays now have 57 players scheduled to report for spring training.
Pitchers and catchers will have their first workout Friday morning.
