ROGER MOONEY
MINNEAPOLIS - The Rays announced this during the top of the first inning:

The Rays have signed free agent Yoel Araujo (pronounced Joel A-ra-oo-hoo), a 16-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic. The 6-3, 190-pound right-handed hitting Araujo will participate in the Rays instructional league this fall and will be assigned to the Rays academy in the Dominican Republic in 2011. Araujo is from San Pedro de Macoris. “He has the potential to be an outstanding all-round player,” said Eddy Toledo, the Rays director of operations in the Dominican. “For a guy his size he has great speed to go along with home run power and a solid arm. We believe he can develop into a five-tool type player. He’s young, but not easily intimidated.” “This is truly the result of tremendous teamwork within our international baseball operations staff,” added Toledo, who credited Carlos Alfonso, the Rays director of international operations and scout Danny Santana for their part in the signing of Araujo.
