Rays’ Shields, Tampa author hosting book signing Nov. 14

Rays pitcher James Shields and Tampa author (and former Tampa Tribune sportswriter) Bill Chastain will be hosting a book signing on Nov. 14.

The pair will be launching the release of “September Nights: Hunting the Beasts of the American League East,” Shields’ incisive look at the Rays’ run to the American League East title in September 2010. The signing will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Beef O’ Brady’s, 2819 S. MacDill Ave. in Tampa. Shields, who just had his option picked up by the Rays on Monday, followed up his 2010 season with a 16-win effort in 2011, leading the majors in complete games (11) and tying for the American League in shutouts (four).

Chastain, who covers the Rays for MLB.com and covered the Rays in their inaugural season for The Tampa Tribune in 1998, said Shields “has a nice way of breaking things down.”

“I like to compare the book to Bugs Bunny because it has things in it that adults will find interesting and humorous, but kids can enjoy it, too,” Chastain said.

Chastain’s next project will be a narrative about Hack Wilson’s amazing 1930 season, where the 5-foot-6 slugger hit 56 homers to set a National League record and set a major-league mark of 191 RBIs, which still stands today. The book will be called “Hack’s 191: Hack Wilson and His Incredible 1930 Season.” Rays adviser Don Zimmer wrote the foreword (I know Zimmer has been in baseball a long time, but no, he didn’t play the same time Wilson did).

The book, published by Lyons Press, will hit the shelves on Jan. 24, 2012.
