ST. PETERSBURG The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Monday midnight deadline for signing draft picks by signing first round pick Josh Sale for a $1.62 million signing bonus and supplemental round pick Drew Vettleson for $845,000.
Sale, the 17th overall pick, is an outfielder from Bishop Blanchet (Wa.) High.
Vettleson, 42nd overall, is an outfielder from Central Kitsap (Wa.) High.
“We feel like both players add a lot to our system in terms of their advanced feel for hitting,” Rays vice president of baseball Andrew Friedman said. “We’re anxious to get both guys out in Rays gear and get the process started on them becoming major league players.”
Friedman made the announcement at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The 6-foot, 215-pound Sale hit .520 during his senior season at Blanchet. He had five home runs, 20 RBI and 27 walks.
The Rays gave Sale more bonus money than the Rangers gave Jake Skole ($1.55 million) and the Cubs gave Hayden Simpson ($1.06 million), the two players selected ahead of Sale.
