ST. PETERSBURG With newly signed draft picks Josh Sale and Drew Vettleson in the house, the Rays will send Matt Garza to the mound tonight in the second game of a three-game set against the AL West leading Rangers.
Sale and Vettleson, both corner outfielders from Washington state, watched batting practice, met Rays players and did interviews. They’ll return home to pack their belongings, then report to the Rays’ training complex at Port Charlotte for instructional league play next month.
There wasn’t much news from manager Joe Maddon pre-game media availability. Maddon said injured starting pitchers Jeff Niemann and Wade Davis had no setbacks after throwing bullpen sessions Monday and that if all goes as planned, the two could pitch in the final two games at Anaheim next week (Aug. 24-25).
Maddon also said first basemen Carlos Pena, who came off the DL on Monday and delivered the game-winning hit in an 6-4 victory, is doing fine. Pena missed two weeks with a plantar fascia sprain.
The Rangers, already without injured right fielder Nelson Cruz and second baseman Ian Kinsler, won’t have third baseman Michael Young in the starting lineup. Young left Monday’s game after the sixth inning with neck stiffness.
