Here is the press release from Starting, Right Now ...

The first homeless family from Starting, Right Now will be given keys to a car by Matthew Silverman, president of the Tampa Bay Rays and board chairman of Starting Right, Now at 10 a.m. Friday to attend a car giveaway at Autoway Nissan of Brandon – 9920 Adamo Drive, Brandon.

The car will allow the family better employment opportunities and the chance for the kids to participate in extra-curricular activities. The recipient of the car is a single mom with three children, who less than one month ago was homeless. She now has employment and an apartment, thanks to the organization.  Now, she will have a mode of transportation as well.

Starting Right, Now is an non-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless families re-establish a stable home, improve parental employment and maintain the continuity of the younger generation’s education by offering an active mentor relationship. With a strong Board of Directors that includes Mayor Pam Iorio; Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools, MaryEllen Elia; Silverman and Stacie Schaible, Channel 8 News Anchor, the program has already successfully re-started families for this school year.

Through the H.E.L.P. Team (Homeless Education and Literacy Project – a grant funded program), a division of Hillsborough County Schools, homeless families are targeted that will allow a hand picked mentor to work directly with their family and lead them out of homelessness. Once accepted, they will be given employment and an apartment that is fully furnished. Their mentor guides them out of homelessness and teaches them skills so that they do not repeat the cycle. With one-on-one mentoring, the program has the capability to address the family’s needs in a comprehensive and endless service offering assistance with guidance at school, housing, clothing, budgeting and referrals within the community.

Although the initial goal of Starting Right, Now focuses on re-establishing the family, the main goal of the program is to help the children within the family realize their educational potential. The program will help the children aspire to attend college, military or vocational school.

Starting Right, Now will not only help the family by getting them on their feet, it helps society as a whole by making the families productive.  And, they will help restore faith in the kids that homelessness has touched.
