BOSTON The Rays pitchers did what no other team as done to the Red Sox since they started playing in the American League in 1901 – hold them to three hits or less in three straight home games.
The Rays did that during this three-game series at Fenway Park that ended Wednesday with a 4-0 victory.
David Price and Kyle Farnsworth combined on a three-hitter Wednesday.
James Shields and Jeff Niemann each tossed complete-game three hitters during Tuesday’s doubleheader.
“Three three-hitters in a row by the starting rotation, that’s outrageous, man, that’s really good stuff,” Joe Maddon said.
“It was amazing. I just saw the stat that said that’s first time that’s every happened in Red Sox history, so that’s a pretty phenomenal job by our pitching staff. Our starters were just lights out,” Ben Zobrist said.
“That’s a pretty good lineup over there. To be able to shut them down with nine hits in three games that’s pretty good,” Shields said.
“We threw the ball very well. They got some guys out of the lineup, who are kind of banged up right now. We took advantage of it. That was good. We didn’t slouch off at all. We came with what we had and threw the ball well,” Price said.
