Baseball’s arbitration season begins tomorrow, and this handy rundown of the entire process from MLB.com suggests it might be a busy few weeks.
The Rays have one arbitration-eligible player remaining, catcher Josh Paul, and his hearing is scheduled for Feb. 9 in Phoenix. If you’ve been following along, you know the Rays have a new policy stipulating the end of contract talks after arbitration figures are exchanged, and they’re sticking to it. I had barely finished a question to that effect to Andrew Friedman this afternoon when he jumped in and answered it—“We’re going.”
Paul’s agent, the venerable Dick Moss (who has represented Nolan Ryan and Andre Dawson, among others), is asking for $940,000, while the Rays countered at $625,000. Paul made $475,000 last season. The team has hired New York attorney Dan Halem to present its case at the hearing. Halem has represented the Marlins, Royals and Expos at arbitration hearings in previous years.

I’ll pretty much guarantee that Paul doesn’t win his case.

With us having Shawn Riggins being ready to go with Navarro, why do we need Paul?

Josh Paul is not the Answer for the Rays. He is getting old and has no arm. Shawn Riggans is young and has a good arm but a little weak at the plate so far but has a great upside potential for the future. They should stick Paul into some trade as a bonus with Upton, Norton & Gomes for some pitching help to a team like the Marlins who need out field help.

For those of us who go to the games, we had a winning season (41 & 40). For those of you who watched the games away, you had a loosing season (20 & 61). If we had won the same on the away we would have been in either 2, 3, or 4th in all divisions both leagues. AL East 4th Place, AL Central 4th Place, AL West 3rd Place, NL East 3rd Place, NL Central 2nd Place, NL West 3Rd Place
