BALTIMORE—As expected, Carl Crawford is not in the lineup for today’s Rays-Orioles matinee after getting hit in the groin area Tuesday night by a pickoff throw.
Manager Joe Maddon said it’s “probably unlikely” he would come off the bench, and Crawford he doesn’t know whether he’ll be ready for Friday’s series opener at Cleveland. The Rays have Thursday off.
Crawford reiterated that he has no plans to start wearing a cup for protection.
“I tried to wear (one) a long time ago,” he said. I run, so it pinches me when I try to run and take off. I make diving catches (and) something could happen worse from wearing a cup, you know? That one incident isn’t going to make me change the way I do things. If it happens again, it just happens again.”
Maddon, who wore a cup as a catcher and as a third-base coach, said he would never impose a cup requirement on players but is constantly amazed that so many players don’t.
“I’d say most (outfielders) don’t,” Maddon said. “I’ve heard of a lot of infielders that do not. Again that amazes me. It would be an interesting poll to take to see who does and who doesn’t. I don’t think it should be required like a helmet. But … I just think for your own future – for the potential father in you – you should wear one.”
After falling 11-10 in 13 innings to the Orioles in Tuesday night’s marathon, the Rays will try to take the three-game series today. They’ll send James Shields (7-9, 4.86) against Brad Bergesen (3-7, 6.37).
Here is Tampa Bay’s lineup:

Bartlett, SS
Longoria, 3B
Pena, 1B
Joyce, LF
