Sean Rodriguez is indeed the final piece in the Scott Kazmir trade, the Rays announced this afternoon.
The 24-year-old infielder, who has torn it up at Triple-A Salt Lake this season (.299, 29 HR, 93 RBIs) and has big-league experience with the Angels, will report to Durham. A move to get him on the 40-man roster will be announced later today.
Rodriguez, a Miami native, also has played shortstop and all three outfield positions, making him a possible replacement for Ben Zobrist as the Rays’ super-utility guy next year if Zobrist steps in for Akinori Iwamura as the everyday second baseman.
Rodriguez has appeared in 71 games for the Angels over the last two seasons, hitting .203 with five homers and striking out a whopping 62 times in 192 at-bats.
