ST. PETERSBURG—The Rays will go for a sweep of the Blue Jays tonight without Carl Crawford in the lineup.
Manager Joe Maddon said he merely wanted to give Crawford some rest and insisted there’s nothing wrong with him, even though today marks the All-Star left fielder’s third day off this week counting Monday’s off day for team. The Blue Jays have a left-handed pitcher going in Brett Cecil, so it made more sense to hold Crawford out tonight rather than against one of the three righthanders the Marlins will throw in this weekend’s home interleague series.
Dioner Navarro was originally in the lineup but was scratched with a stiff neck. John Jaso replaced him and will bat eighth.
The Rays reached an agreement with second-round pick Derek Dietrich, subject to him passing a physical, and have him at the game tonight. The Georgia Tech shortstop is due to report to the Class A Hudson Valley Renegades on Sunday.
Here is Tampa Bay’s lineup:
B.J. Upton, CF
Sean Rodriguez, 2B
Evan Longoria, 3B
Willy Aybar, DH
Ben Zobrist, RF
Carlos Pena, 1B
Gabe Kapler, LF
John Jaso, C
Reid Brignac, SS
