ST. PETERSBURG - With one of their steadiest pitchers going, the Rays will try to finish the first half with a 6-1 homestand today against the Indians.
Jeff Niemann (7-2, 2.62 ERA) will face former Red Sox right-hander Justin Masterson (3-8, 5.22) in the 1:40 p.m. game at Tropicana Field. The Rays are 8-2 in July after going 10-14 in June, and if they win today, they’ll go into the break at 20 games over .500.
Manager Joe Maddon’s lineup has All-Star left fielder Carl Crawford at DH for a second conseuctive day. Crawford strained his left shoulder June 24 and still has some latent soreness. Matt Joyce will start in left field.
While most of the Rays will get the next three days off before a workout Thursday, four players will head to Anaheim for the All-Star Game. Crawford and third baseman Evan Longoria will start Tuesday night’s game, and David Price (12-4) and Rafael Soriano (23 saves) are part of the pitching staff. Price is in line to start the game.
