ST. PETERSBURG The news on third baseman Evan Longoria’s strained quad is encouraging. Longoria said he’s already doing better after a day off and doesn’t expect more than a few more games.
Sean Rodriguez played third base in the Rays’ 5-3 victory against the Mariners last night, and Dan Johnson will get the start there tonight in the middle game of the series.
The Rays entered today with a half-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East and a magic number of three for clinching a playoff berth. The Yankees and Red Sox are playing an afternoon game, and Boston was leading 6-0 in the seventh inning.
