ST. PETERSBURG The news on third baseman Evan Longoria’s strained quad is encouraging. Longoria said he’s already doing better after a day off and doesn’t expect more than a few more games.

Sean Rodriguez played third base in the Rays’ 5-3 victory against the Mariners last night, and Dan Johnson will get the start there tonight in the middle game of the series.

The Rays entered today with a half-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East and a magic number of three for clinching a playoff berth. The Yankees and Red Sox are playing an afternoon game, and Boston was leading 6-0 in the seventh inning.

Here are tonight’s lineups:

MARINERS

Ichiro Suzuki, RF
Chone Figgns, 2B
Jose Lopes, 3B
Franklin Gutierrez, CF
Casey Kochman, 1B
Adam Moore, C
Matt Mangini, DH
Mike Carp, LF
Josh Wilson, SS

Doug Fister, RHP (6-12, 3.83)

RAYS

Ben Zobrist, 2B
Carl Crawford, LF
Dan Johnson, 3B
Matt Joyce, RF
Carlos Pena, 1B
Brad Hawpe, DH
B.J. Upton, CF
Reid Brignac, SS

Matt Garza, RHP (14-, 4.01)
