TORONTO—Wade Davis, unbeaten in his last eight starts, takes a six-game winning streak into this afternoon’s game with the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
The rookie needs one win to tie Jeff Niemann and Mark Hendrickson for the longest winning streak by a pitcher in team history.
In other news of note: Joe Maddon and Jim Hickey had a closed door meeting with James Shields this morning as they discussed ways for Shields to get back on track. Maddon said Shields is trying to do too much, perhaps feeling the pressure of the playoff race and his role as the elder statesmen of the staff.
Carlos Pena was dropped one spot to sixth in the lineup. Given Pena’s recent struggles, Maddon wanted to move Ben Zobrist behind Evan Longoria.
Rocco Baldelli, who DHed Friday, will likely return to the lineup tomorrow.
Brad Hawpe will be the DH today even though it makes for a lefty-lefty matchup with Jays starter Ricky Romero, because Romero is not all that tough on lefties.
Here are the lineups:
