PORT CHARLOTTE Former Rangers third baseman/first baseman Hank Blalock is reportedly deciding between minor league offers from the Rays and Marlins.
Why would the Rays be interested?
Because VP of baseball Andrew Friedman is always looking to improve his club, and because having a left-handed power hitter at Durham who hit 25 home runs in 495 at-bats last season and was a two-time All-Star during his eight years in Texas is not a bad option if a need arose on the big league level for a third baseman or first baseman.
Also, Rays 1B Carlos Pena is in the final year of a contract that pays him $10 million this season, and the Rays really don’t have a replacement within the organization.
