Rays executive VP of baseball Andrew Friedman wouldn’t confirm the Rays interest, but this is one rumor that has some legs.
The Rays need a closer, and the right-handed Soriano saved 27 games in 31 save opportunities last season.
Soriano will come with a price, though, since he accepted the Braves offer for arbitration and stands to make somewhere between $6 million and $8 million next season.
That would be too high for the Rays, especially when team owner Stuart Sternberg said last week that the $7 million closer wasn’t coming.
This is a deal that could happen if the Rays can get the Braves to eat some of Soriano’s 2010 contract.
It probably won’t happen here in Indianapolis since there are too many moving parts to the deal.
