Rays: Duncan play ‘flat-out dirty’

Most of the Rays’ starters are out of the game now and their opinions on Shelley Duncan’s bench-clearing slide into Aki Iwamura in the second inning were unanimous.

“Dirty play,” said B.J. Upton. “Just a flat-out dirty play. Period.”

Jonny Gomes said he wasn’t surprised Duncan did what he did considering his comments to the New York media this week that he would consider retaliation for Saturday’s play, and he didn’t hesitate to get involved.

“That was sort of second nature,” he said. “I was taught from T-ball all the way up to have your teammate’s back. With that guy trying to hurt a teammate, I just acted how I acted.”

Gomes did get an initial shot in on Duncan but said an all-out brawl wasn’t his goal.

“I probably could have done a lot of things worse, but it is a baseball field and there’s fans and kids watching,” said Gomes. “I just had to let him know, that’s not going to fly with me on the field.”

Troy Percival was in the clubhouse for the play, but he saw the spike marks visible on Iwamura’s uniform pants, above his knee on the inside of the leg, and wasn’t happy.

“You’re just going out there, spikes high, trying to put them into somebody?” said Percival. “There’s no room in baseball for that kind of stuff. Ty Cobb’s been gone a long time.”

Like others in the clubhouse, Percival expressed surprise that the Yankees would be involved in a play like that.

“It’s not typical of them, that’s for sure,” said Percival. “They’ve always been a professional organization. They’ve always played hard and they’ve always played smart. I won’t say that about today’s game.”

Hey, everyone already knows:

Yankees suck.

Very classy Jerk Off, I mean Jack Off, I don’t even know why your asinine comment isn’t deleted yet. You call us cry babies when you guys are the ones still worrying about an incident that happened last week. At least that was actually a legit play, unlike the sorry excuse for a slide was today. If you don’t care what this columnist has to say then don’t get on the site. Oh and by the way I do believe the best record in all of baseball currently resides here in TAMPA Florida.

Hey Jack.  It’s not crying.  Look at the play.  It was the most blatant “high spikes” play since that wonderful human being Cobb left the field for the last time.  Duncan is a hack, always has been.  He should go play hockey where his apparent job on the Yanks makes more sense.  Also, it was Girardi (for whom I, as a Cubs fan, have a lot of respect) that started the BAWLING.

How is that play not dirty? Duncan was clearly trying to injure Iwamura. I am not a fan of the Rays or Yankees, but that was uncalled for. If I was a Yankees fan, I would be embarrassed right now.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.  The Rays manager wants his team to try to intimidate the Yankees, but doesn’t expect a response in kind?  SPARE ME!  As Jack Lambert once said, “No one can be allowed to Intimidate us...We’re supposed to be the intimidators!”

And the Yanks don’t care whether Tampa likes it or not.  When your team is 64-98 again this season and Maddon’s been fired, all his rah rah garbage won’t count for squat.

Your incredibly ignorant ‘Jack’. Of course it was a dirty play you fool, you obviously dont understand the game of baseball. Its not proffesional wresting, kickboxing, or the ufc. Its the MLB. A player was protecting his teammate. You, sir, are an idiot. Good story by the way.

What a joke the rays are, the most pathetic team in baseball, who the heck is Johnny Gomes? He’ll be out baseball soon. duncan slid in, he wasn’trying to hurt the guy, get real!! I guess when your team stinks year after year you need to get attention some way.

Hey Jack from Maine,

Maybe you should get a clue. Sliding spikes up like that is absolutely dirty. Not only that, but considering his comments earlier in the week, it is hard to argue that it was not premeditated. It doesn’t surprise me you feel this way, though, because it is obvious that like Duncan, you have no class.

Nice Photo, try showing the first photo which actually shows duncan sliding into second, not the shot you have which is AFTER Aki Iwamura backed up!

He hit Iwamura above the ankle, and no higher than the knee.

Whats worse, a blog about dirty tactics or you coming on a TPa web site to cry about your Yankees being a bunch of bit#ches. Go cry on your own web site, dic#!!!

I love how this behavior is just fine when it’s the Rays and Maddon trying to create a new atmosphere. LOL @ changing the team name, they still are and always will be losers.

Jack, you bumbling idiot. Yankees were the ones who couldn’t handle hard, legal play and retaliated with a bush league and illegal one. Funny that the Astros, and everyone else but the Yankees, had no problem with the plays at the plate.

But this is absolutely fantastic for the Rays and their fans, galvanizing a team that’s already nearly as talented as the Yankees, and although I wouldn’t have said this a year ago, probably better coached too. Huge tactical error on Girardi’s part.  Just what he needed what an upstart like the Rays to start believing they can knock off the big kid on the block! Ok, no longer the big kid on the block… that’s the Red Sox… more like the slightly overweight and soft kid of rich parents on the block.

What a wonderful example these players are setting for the kids in the stands. Of course I’m being facetious. Another poor example of professional ball players acting like children. What makes things worse I just watched the news broadcast at 5:30 and the sports newscaster was praising the actions of those players. Makes me question the values and morals of Channel 8 News.

sounds like YANKROID fans getting Nervous. Both plays against the Astros and classless YANKROIDS we’re clean plays. Girardi himself always played that way. Then they don’t even have the balls to start Pettit or any of the over priced stars because they might get hurt. This is going to be a good year watching the Yankroids crumble.

1. If your grand organization and classy fans don’t care about it then what are you doing here and why are you still crying about it? Seems to me like you do care if you took the time to read a “hack’s” blog and then respond with a comment.

2. We are not in South Florida and the history of baseball in Florida goes back so far you clearly need a lesson about these things before you go off talking about them. Last time I checked people play baseball in Florida year round. I’d like to see that happen in Maine.

Maybe one day you’ll be able to realize the difference between an injury that occurs out of fair play in baseball and when one player goes out of his way to try to injure another.

Posted by  John, Tampa on 03/12  at  04:53 PM

You know what guy, Johnson did not intend to hurt the catcher, however, Duncan tried to hurt Aki. And dont tell me if the yanks ran into another team’s catcher that all of yanks nation will have supported that play. So for now all of you hippocrits should shut it. And by the way, very classy taking shots at a writer not in you community. Why dont you stick to talking crap to fisherman in the depressing state that you live in, Maine, ughe feel sorry for you. Must be jelous of the awsome weather we have here. Oh yeah, thanks for the geography lesson, I forgot that Tampa is in south Florida because I could swear that it is in west central Florida. Lets see if you would like to be kleeted for no reason.
